Old Town Dubovac

Old Town Dubovac, one of the best-preserved examples of feudal architecture in Croatia, is situated on an elevation above Karlovac, surrounded by an ancient oak forest, from which it takes its name. With a history dating back to before the 13th century, Dubovac bears traces of a rich past and various noble families, with its current appearance largely due to the Frankopan family, who owned it from 1442 to 1550.

Dubovac was a site of intense Turkish attacks, but its strong walls withstood the devastation. During the French occupation in the early 19th century, General Vienney transformed the castle into a country retreat for the military and civilian elite. The castle later became the property of Karl Laval Nugent, who made further renovations. The City of Karlovac took over the care of Dubovac in the late 19th century, but restoration progressed slowly due to the unstable conditions of the time.

Dubovac was restored in 1963, returning it to its authentic appearance. Today, it features three round and one square tower, characteristic Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements, as well as gun ports that evoke the spirit of the medieval era. Spanning 829.85 m², Dubovac encompasses the interior space, staircases, galleries, and a spacious courtyard.
