Old Town Ozalj

Ozalj

Perched high on a cliff above the Kupa River, the Old Town of Ozalj holds a rich history dating back to the 6th century. As one of the most significant medieval landmarks in Croatia, the town was home to many noble families over the centuries, including the Babonić, Frankopan, and Zrinski families. It is particularly renowned for the Zrinski Palace, a monumental 16th-century structure built on a steep rock. The palace has preserved wall frescoes, engraved Glagolitic inscriptions, and a wooden shingle roof, offering an authentic glimpse into Renaissance-era Croatia.

Throughout its long history, Ozalj has undergone multiple transformations, with its present-day appearance shaped by various reconstructions. The most recent restoration work, carried out between 2013 and 2018, included the renovation of the roof, façade, and museum space. Since 1928, the fortress has been managed by the "Brethren of the Croatian Dragon" Society, which has established the Dragon Museum and library, preserving numerous historical documents and artifacts.

This magnificent castle is more than just a monument of the past—it serves as a living connection to the great Zrinski-Frankopan heritage, making it an essential destination for all lovers of history and culture.
