A winter dream

When we invite you to visit us in winter, you might think that snow is becoming scarce and that winter in Karlovac County cannot be particularly appealing or interesting. But you’d be mistaken! It may be true that snow is less frequent, but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy fairytale-like scenery.

Join us on a trip to Ogulin, the hometown of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić. They say she drew inspiration for her fairy tales from the mystical, misty landscapes where she spent her childhood. Winter is an especially enchanting time to visit Lake Sabljaci, as mist rises from the lake’s surface and ghostly figures seem to emerge from the almost frozen waters, disappearing into the light breaking through the sky. Don’t be afraid. You’re under the watchful guard of the giant Regoč, who grew tired and laid down on the peak of Mount Klek to sleep. If you look closely, you might just see his breath puffing out from his mouth, and his large belly rising and falling as he breathes slowly. Hike up the mountain trail and feel the power of nature that has so generously welcomed you into its kingdom.

On your way back, visit the Ogulin Homeland Museum located in the Frankopan castle. There, you’ll find the Alpine Collection, established in 1984, since Ogulin, thanks to Mount Klek, is the cradle of Croatian mountaineering and alpine climbing. In fact, a meeting held at an Ogulin café, attended by Vladimir Mažuranić (grandson of Ban I. Mažuranić), directly led to the founding of the Croatian Mountaineering Association in Zagreb in 1874.

For those not keen on climbing, simply step into the Ivana’s House of Fairy Tales in the center of Ogulin, where its interactive exhibits will transport you farther than you could have imagined. Legends and myths brought to life as fairy tale characters will reveal things about yourself you never knew.

Ogulin is most magical when it snows. Locals then open the ski trail they set up themselves. Everyone skis, and the youngest enjoy sledding. Join them. You’ll enjoy mulled wine and hot tea, and you’ll have more fun than on professionally groomed slopes.

Winters are especially beautiful in the Slunj area. A series of forts, old towns, and towers provide the perfect combination with winter landscapes for you to become a true photo artist. A few camera clicks, a good spot by the water, maybe near a mill or waterfall, and you’re ready to share your scenes with the world. You’ll notice many ranches with horses; try horseback riding if it’s not too cold. If you’re up for more speed and adrenaline, go for a quad ride or try some paintball. You’ll have so much fun and excitement, you’ll feel like you’re dreaming wide awake.
