Lasinja

Explore peaceful flow of the Kupa River.

Lasinja is located in the lowlands where the Kupa River begins its peaceful journey toward the mouth. The great significance of the Kupa River to the Lasinja region is immortalized by placing the river's symbol on the Lasinja coat of arms, while the swallow on the crest tells a historical tale of the Lasinja culture. The swallows will show you the way when you come to Lasinja, and if you indulge them, they might even lead you to some of the quietest spots where the Kupa keeps its secrets.

The Lasinja culture is a well-known Eneolithic culture that spread from 3700 to 3200 BC, developing in the Lasinja area and extending through continental Croatia, Bosnia's Posavina region, Slovenia, Carinthia, and Hungary, around Lake Balaton. It was named after the site of Talijanovo Brdo in Lasinja. Is that enough to inspire you to explore this region? Such a vast history in such a small place!

What do swallows have to do with the Lasinja culture? Swallows have a distinctive way of building their nests, just as the ancient inhabitants of the Lasinja region had a specific method for crafting ceramic vessels and ornaments. Who knows, maybe they were their inspiration. Furthermore, swallows, according to ancient Slavic beliefs, are sacred birds that connect the sky and the earth, which may explain why so many churches were built throughout history. There are the remains of the ruined parish church of St. Anthony of Padua, as well as the newly built church of the same name, and if you embark on a small exploration of the chapels, make sure to take your time.

Since Lasinja is located on the right bank of the Kupa River, the surrounding areas have logically received names like Desni Štefanki and Desno Sredičko. Perfect for orientation, and interesting to visit. The question arises, though: Did the fishpond Crna Draga (Black Swamp) get its name from the dark color of its water? That question remains open for all the curious.

Lasinja remembers troubled times and people who constantly moved, like swallows. It remembers wars that always leave scars. But it also remembers the peaceful times of prosperity in this quiet pastoral region. And swallows, just like the people of Lasinja, always return to where they built their home.
