Ozalj

Visit the magical town of castles and legends along the Kupa River.

The first encounter with Ozalj is the Kupa River, and on the Kupa stands Munjara, a hydroelectric plant that, like a castle, sits in the middle of the river. A beautiful example of industrial architecture, it still generates electricity today. From Munjara, the view drifts towards the stone structure of the Old Town of Ozalj, built on a cliff above the Kupa. If you're traveling by train, you'll pass through a tunnel beneath the foundations of the Old Town, right on the riverbank.

This has been an attractive settlement since Roman times, and some Roman foundations are still hidden beneath the castle. The Old Town of Ozalj is the place from where the Zrinski and Frankopan families set out on their battles, in the distant dawns of history, accompanied by the creaking of the wooden bridge that would rise and fall over the defensive moats. This town within a town once held one of the richest libraries of its time and a life of nobility who cared for and defended their people. Today, the local museum in the Old Town bears witness to this history, and by touring the entire building, it’s easy to imagine life as it once was.

A small gem of Ozalj is the settlement of Trg, strategically located for defense, on a meander of the Kupa River. A wise, planned choice due to constant threats from various invaders, the settlement on this natural peninsula was further protected by an artificial canal, making it an impregnable island. Here, you’ll also find a small kingdom of "jalba," woven hair ornaments worn by married women, now protected as a cultural heritage. Walking through Trg, the traditional houses covered with straw catch your attention—don't forget that this was as modern and functional in its time as today's "smart" roofs with solar panels, which, in the future, will also become relics of history.

And while you're wandering the Ozalj region, where history is reflected in every view, don’t miss the Pauline Monastery with the parish church in Svetice, a centuries-old sanctuary of faith, Croatian history, art, and culture. Then, slowly return to the Kupa Riverbank near Munjara, experience the scenes painted by Slava Raškaj, swim in the local swimming area, and head out on one of the wine routes. In vino veritas—this still holds true.
